DESCRIPTION: A soldier asks a maid to go with him to the "Braes of Killiecrankie"; he'll buy her a silk gown and fine coat. She won't go because her mother would be angry and her father would follow them. The soldier sleeps alone with his pack.

NOTES [56 words]: Of "The Braes of Killiecrankie" and "The Birks of Abergeldy," one must be source and the other derivative. The tune, according to the commentary at broadside NLScotland, Ry.III.a.10(057), "The Birks of Abergeldy," was first recorded in 1692. The broadside itself is from c.1701. I'm guessing "The Birks of Abergeldy" is the source. - BS
