NOTES [83 words]: Tavistock Goose Fair is a real event, allegedly going back to the twelfth century and settled on its current date of the second Wednesday in October when the calendar was changed in 1752. It is thought that the "Goose Fair" was scheduled so that geese could be acquired for holiday meals. As now managed, it is both a fair (in the sense of a place to buy and trade goods) and an entertainment event, with performances in the evening. So it makes sense for a couple of bumpkins to want to go there. - RBW
