The Traditional Ballad Index

Unix Software Instructions

The Ballad Index for UNIX is a C program designed to compile using the standard GCC compiler. The distribution available on this page includes the complete source code, makefiles for Solaris and Linux, instructions, and support files. It does not include the Ballad Index data file, which must be downloaded separately.

It is strongly suggested that you read both the instructions (which, for the most part, apply to the generic Ballad Index) and the ReadMe file, compiled by Don Nichols specifically for unix. The latter explains how to prepare the file, and also explains how all this is programmed.

Please note that this is a beta version. We know it does not work on some versions of unix (and are trying to figure out why).

The Ballad Index source code is protected under Version 2 of the GNU public license (also enclosed). For details, see the instructions or the ReadMe file.

Be sure to read the What's New file for information on changes to the current version.

The above archive includes a text version of the instructions; if you prefer the PDF version (which probably better represents the way the screen shots should look), you can download it here.

If you can't get the beta to work, and don't want to be part of the group working on fixing it, you can click here to download the The Ballad Index Software code and support files (version 1.0)
