NOTES [138 words]: Keith Jackson and Alan McRobie, Historical Dictionary of New Zealand (Oceanian Historical Dictionaries #5), The Scarecrow Press, 1996, p. 161, give this short biography of Dr. Archibald McIndoe:
McIndoe, Archibald Hector [1900-1960]. Plastic surgeon. New Zealand-born, McIndoe qualified as a doctor of medicine and after experience in the Mayo clinic in the United States, studied plastic surgery in England under the guidance of fellow New Zealander and relative Harold Gillies. On the outbreak of the Second World War he became the director of the plastic and jaw injury centre which, with his "Guinea-pig Club," led to international recognition of his work.
He also has a very substantial Wikipedia entry. Despite the somewhat fatalistic tone of this song, he clearly did good work for a great many badly injured warriors. - RBW
