NOTES [154 words]: According to Wikipedia, the musical drama "The Maid of the Mountains" had a book by Frederick Lonsdale; the primary music was by Harold Fraser-Simson, with additional music by James W. Tate; the lyrics to the songs were by Harry Graham and others. It previewed in December 1916, with the main run of the show (which had been somewhat reworked) beginning in February 1917. It had a long London run, although its success was mixed in other countries.
The song "A Bachelor Gay" was sung by the character Beppo, played by Thorpe Bates. It was one of the songs that was not by the primary composers; the lyrics were by F. Clifford Harris and "Valentine," and the music by James W. Tate; the sheet music bears a 1917 copyright. It begins
A bachelor gay am I
Though I suffer from Cupid's dart
But never I vow will I say die
In spite of an aching heart....
There were several recordings in the twenty years after it was written. - RBW
