Up in a Sop

DESCRIPTION: "Oh, Mother, put on your Golden Star, Your son's gone up in a Sop. The wings are weak, the ship's a freak, She's got a rickety prop, The motor's junk, your son is drunk, He's sure to take a flop... Your son's gone up in a Sop."

NOTES [96 words]: Ward-Jackson/Lucas-AirmansSongBook says this is sung to "John Brown's Body." It's not the tune I know by that name!
"Sop" unquestionably refers to a plane by the Sopwith company, but that isn't much help; Sopwith produced at least ten military plane models during World War One, from the Sopwith Camel (considered the best British fighter of the war) to the Sopwith Pup and Sopwith 1½ Strutter to such oddities as the Sopwith Baby, the Sopwith Dolphin, and the Sopwith Tabloid. No doubt some of those latter planes deserved every sarcastic word, but they weren't widely used. - RBW
