NOTES [111 words]: There seem to be no traditional versions of this; every version now in print appears to go back to Emerick's 1852 printing, which lists no author. Did Emerick write it? No way to tell. It is worth noting that Zachary Taylor, the hero of this piece, was elected President in 1849, then died in 1850; he would still have been president when Emerick's book was published had he not died young. Perhaps the song was in honor of Buena Vista; perhaps in honor of Taylor.
Steve Roud files one version of this with #2829, "On Buena Vista'a Battlefield." But the two songs are clearly distinct, so I'm listing this with the unique V number Steve uses for another version. - RBW
