NOTES [60 words]: This isn't the only Civil War song entitled "The Young Volunteer"; Paddle-Your-Own-Canoe-Songster, p. 60, has one that begins "See, with feather proudly streaming, I'm a rifle volunteer, I'm a rifle volunteer." But that, as best I can tell, never went into tradition. Of course, I haven't seen any evidence that John Hill Hewitt's song is traditional either. - RBW
