NOTES [59 words]: Swan-BalladsAndFolkSongsFromMorningSunIowa says her father learned this fro one of the McGuffey Readers, although Swan could not find copy, I did find it in a 1925 McGuffey Reader, but that is obviously far too late.
The several copies of this I found had distinctly different texts, which perhaps implies some rewriting, but none listed an author. - RBW
