NOTES [73 words]: Although this song clearly puts the blame for the baby's death on the mother, and today we would assuredly blame her for leaving her child at home unprotected, it is most unlikely that the mother could have saved the child by staying home; if the poor boy died that quickly, he was already sick by the time the mother left. I'd file this under "bogus tear-jerkers," not because it isn't pathetic but because it isn't at all probable. - RBW
