NOTES [65 words]: Tobruk, on the north coast of Libya, was the focus of a lot of fighting -- it was the best harbor in the area, and so important for logistical purposes. It was beseiged for many months in 1941 before finally being captured. Presumably this song dates from that period.
In many conflicts, there has been an informal truce allowing soldiers to relieve themselves safely. But not this time. - RBW
