NOTES [65 words]: The Normandy invasion took place in June 1944, but it took a long time for the allies to really break out of the German containment. It was winter by the time the invasion of Germany really got underway. Arguably the toughest fighting of all, at the Battle of the Bulge, was in late December. So finding shelter at night was important for both sides, but it was a nerve-wracking process. - RBW
