NOTES [47 words]: Most of this appears to be a fairly generic prison/chain gang song, although it's hard to tell which one, but the opening is different, so I've filed it as a separate song. I wonder about the form -- it's given in ballad stanzas, but it really feels like it ought to be a blues. - RBW
