Sep 17, 1928 - the "Okeechobee hurricane," having already done great damage in the Carribean, makes landfall in Florida near West Palm Beach. According to Wikipedia, the storm killed at least 2500 people in Florida and more than 4000 people overall.

There are at least two books about this event, Okeechobee Hurricane: Killer Storms in the Everglades by Lawrence E. Will and The Great Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928 by Wayne Neely. I have not seen either. The latter is apparently from 2019, so it ought to have access to a lot of information, at least. - RBW
