NOTES [62 words]: I can find no reference to this song that does not go back, in some form or other, to the recording by Paul Robeson. I strongly suspect it is composed, presumably by the Harry S. Pepper credited in the sheet music (which came out around the time Robeson recorded the song). But since it is often listed as traditional, I include it here. I really am dubious, though. - RBW
