NOTES [58 words]: It appears to me that there are two forms of this, one in which the singer is a performer, female, who is being winked at by the audience; this is the version in the Lydia-Thompson-Songster. The sheet music version seems to involve a girl simply living her life who suffers all the winks. I don't know which is older; I would guess the latter. - RBW
