NOTES [65 words]: The earliest version I know of this is from a children's recording by Sandy and Caroline Paton, "When the Spirit Says Sing," which I am sure precedes the 1997 date shown above -- but the Smithsonian Folkways site lists it as from 2003. This is the date of the CD reissue, I think, but I don't have the original cassette, so I have to date the song to 1997. No one seems to know the origin. - RBW
