NOTES [74 words]: I almost decided to put the Jerry Bryan recording under "Bound to California," because (1) it's on the same topic as that song, (2) it sounds like an elaboration of the minimal text in Hugill (possibly by a revival singer), (3) it sounds a bit like "Shallow Brown" to me, and (4) Black shanties did tend to have improvised lyrics, and the Bryan version certainly is ripe for that. But it also belongs here. Possibly the two should are related. - RBW
