NOTES [110 words]: When Joseph Smith was killed and Brigham Young took over the (largest faction of) the Mormon church, he faced the problem of how to avoid the sort of persecution that led to Smith's lynching. His solution was to migrate to a region he thought no one else would want -- the Great Salt Lake. The region was so inhospitable that it wasn't really possible for individuals to survive there; they had to cooperate more than Americans tend to like. This song appears to describe one of the communal groups that arose out of Young's migration.
According to Fife/Fife-SaintsOfSageAndSaddle, there was actually a place called "Orderville" that followed these precepts. - RBW
