NOTES [112 words]: Greig/Duncan3 cites different interpretations. Maybe it refers to 1645, "when contingents were gathering to the Battle of Alford." Duncan says "the verses given seem to me much more like the celebration of some kind [of] gathering for sport or merry making.... The words do not suggest the ballad style of the seventeenth century."
