DESCRIPTION: A sailor dreams of being swamped by a whale. At the sea bottom he finds a ship and its skeleton crew. He is awakened before he can get an answer from them about "the quick and the dead."

LONG DESCRIPTION: A sailor "on board the 'Contest'" sailing the South Pacific dreams "a dream, whose horror quite Gave me the blues, for a day and a night": the harpooneers "fastened" to a whale that ran "ten miles and more." It stops. Their work begins but, then, he dreams he wakes at the bottom of the sea. He finds a wreck sunk in 1810. He boards it, finding, literally, a skeleton crew. He asks a question about life after death but is awakened by the call "Turn out there! ... Come and get your grub!"
