NOTES [127 words]: The description is based on the Edwards-BahamaSongsAndStories text. The line "an' he gave them commishun to fly" is sung five times and may be a response to called lines "'E roll the stone from over the grave," "Bow low," "Brother Lazarus" and "Simon Peter." - BS
I'm reminded of the story of Simon Magus and Peter in the heretical Acts of Peter (a story which has no Biblical basis at all; Simon Magus, in Acts, did deeds of power -- but repented when he was bawled out for trying to buy the Holy Spirit). Peter and Simon had a miracles contest, and one of Simon's miracles was to fly. Peter's counter-miracle was to shoot him down. I doubt anyone who knew this song would have known the "Acts of Peter," but perhaps it says something about how people think. - RBW
