Roud #13829
NOTES [111 words]: Spaeth attributes his text to Monroe H. Rosenfeld, and it's certainly bad enough to be a Rosenfeld song. But... Rosenfeld wasn't born until 1862, and the version in CatherineHayesSwanOfErinSongster is eleven years older than that! It looks as if Rosenfeld modified an existing song, which was even worse than the Rosenfeld version. I have not managed to locate the author of the original. Maybe whoever it was died of embarrassment before publishing the thing. It isn't even grammatical!
I'm not sure the two should really be lumped, but Roud seems to combine them, so I will. It's not as if anyone is likely to ever want to sing either version, except as a joke. - RBW
