NOTES [82 words]: Burton and Manning lump it with Sharp's "The Virginia Lover," which is also heavily composite; these are the sorts of songs that are really hard to classify.... It seems clear that this is a composite, though it's hard to tell of what. Various verses reminded me of "Pretty Saro," "The Bramble Briar (The Merchant's Daughter; In Bruton Town)" [Laws M32], "When First Unto this Country," and others. Like Roud, I file it separately because it doesn't seem to have a single dominant component. - RBW
