Patterson, A Tree Accursed: Bobby McMillon and Stories of Frankie Silver, University of North Carolina Press, 2000, p. 118, credits this to "Uncle Bill Ellison," who supposedly gave it to Jim Brown, who expanded it and gave his version to the Watauga Democrat. This seems likely, but as it is third-hand, I doubt it can be verified. - RBW
