NOTES [70 words]: Allen/Ware/Garrison-SlaveSongsUnitedStates spell the name in this song "Emanuel" (one "m"), and I have followed this even though it has no scriptural basis; in the King James rendering of Isaiah 7:14, 8:8, it's "Immanuel," and in Matthew 1:23 we find "Emmanuel." Nor is Emmanuel ever called a king, though this usage is understandable since in Matthew 1:23 (though not the uses in Isaiah) it is taken to refer to Jesus. - RBW
