NOTES [64 words]: I have a funny feeling that, if we could actually go back and ask the composer about this, it would have something to do with Noah's flood. But it's only a feeling; neither the word "flood" nor the word "Noah" occurs in the Allen/Ware/Garrison-SlaveSongsUnitedStates version, and at least one of their informants claimed it had to do with a "prophetess" who baptized in the rain. - RBW
