NOTES [59 words]: Averill-CampSongsFolkSongs, p. 171, appears to say that this was written in 1883. This, however, appears to be a reference to the tune, (the Rudy Vallee version of) "Tavern in the Town." I can't find any really early printings of the words, but it was well enough known that they inflicted it upon me in elementary school, probably in the late 1960s. - RBW
